Muscle Butter vs. Body Butter: What’s the Difference?
At first glance, Muscle Butter and Body Butter may look similar. Both are typically made with nourishing plant butters and oils designed to support healthy, moisturized skin. The difference lies in the formulation and intended use.
Body Butters are generally created with skin hydration as the primary goal. They help replenish moisture and leave the skin feeling soft and nourished.
Muscle Butters, on the other hand, are often formulated with ingredients selected to complement massage and post-activity body care. While formulations vary from brand to brand, many incorporate ingredients traditionally used in herbal wellness practices or recovery rituals.

What makes Aye & I’s Muscle Butter different?
Founded in 2020 by California herbalist Danielle Motley, Aye & I Apothecary was built on the belief that body care can be intentional, transparent, and rooted in the power of plants.
That philosophy is reflected in every jar of Muscle Butter. The formula is handcrafted in small batches, centered around kombo butter, and made with clearly listed ingredients you can recognize and understand. Nothing hidden. No vague wellness language. Just a thoughtful blend created to support massage, moisture, and everyday care.
The result is a body butter that feels personal: practical enough for daily use, special enough for a self-care ritual, and rooted in the belief that what you put on your body matters.
Where does kombo butter come from?

Kombo butter comes from the seeds of the West African Nutmeg (Pycnanthus angolensis) tree, a tall evergreen that grows wild in the forests of West and Central Africa and belongs to the same botanical family as true nutmeg. Across the continent the tree is known by many names — most widely ilomba — and the rich, golden fat pressed from its aromatic seeds has carried the name kombo butter for generations. At Aye & I Apothecary, kombo butter is the signature ingredient at the heart of our Muscle Butter formulation.
The tree itself is something to picture. It can grow well past 30 meters tall, with a straight trunk and broad, leathery leaves, and it thrives in the wet tropical forests that stretch from Senegal and Guinea down to Angola and across to the Congo basin. Its seeds are fragrant, resembling the true nutmeg you might keep in your spice drawer — which is how it came to be called African nutmeg in the first place.
For generations, the butter pressed from those seeds has held a practical, everyday place in West and Central African life, used in traditional soap-making and as a natural source of light. This is a plant woven into daily living, not a laboratory novelty — and that heritage is exactly what drew Danielle to it.
This is where the Aye & I philosophy shows up most clearly. We believe traditional plant knowledge and thoughtful modern formulation can exist side by side. We honor generations of plant knowledge while remaining committed to ingredient transparency, intentional formulation, and helping customers understand exactly what they’re putting on their bodies. For us, honoring tradition and embracing transparency go hand in hand.
So when you warm a little Muscle Butter between your hands, you are reaching for a botanical with real roots — a seed butter that has been part of people’s daily care far longer than any modern shelf. We believe knowing the story behind your ingredients is part of caring for your body with intention.
What’s inside our Muscle Butter?
Muscle Butter is a blend of nourishing butters, lightweight oils, and calming botanicals, led by kombo butter. Each ingredient earns its place: the butters and oils care for your skin, and the botanicals shape the calming, herbal experience. Here is what is in the jar and what each one does for you.
Kombo butter: the heart of the formula
Kombo butter is the botanical at the center of our Muscle Butter, and it is the reason this is not just another body butter. As we covered above, it is pressed from the seeds of the African Pycnanthus angolensis tree, and it is naturally rich in a fatty acid called myristoleic acid.
We chose kombo as the signature ingredient because of that heritage and because it anchors the whole blend with character. In our formula, it sits alongside the nourishing butters and oils to create a balm made for the moments your muscles feel tired and overworked. We describe what it brings to the ritual; we do not make medical claims about what it does inside your body. That honesty is part of how we earn your trust.
Shea, cocoa, and coconut: the nourishing base
The body of Muscle Butter comes from three classic plant butters and oils. Shea butter is rich and creamy, and it seals in moisture while supporting your skin’s natural barrier. Cocoa butter is full of fatty acids and antioxidants, melts beautifully against the skin, and lends the blend its velvety, indulgent texture. Coconut oil is the lighter of the three — it absorbs readily, softens the skin, and helps the whole butter glide on smoothly.
Together, these three are the reason your skin still feels soft hours after you apply it. They do the quiet, dependable work of deep hydration so the rest of the formula can shine.
Jojoba and apricot oils: lightweight moisture
Not every oil should sit heavy on the skin. Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax that closely resembles your skin’s own sebum, which is why it delivers non-greasy moisture and helps your skin feel balanced rather than slick. Apricot kernel oil is gentle and lightweight too, naturally rich in vitamins A and E, and it leaves the skin feeling soft and looking refreshed.
Together, these lightweight oils help create the smooth, easy-gliding texture that makes Muscle Butter ideal for massage while absorbing beautifully into the skin.
Lavender, cedarwood, and jasmine: the calming aroma
The scent of Muscle Butter is built from three natural essential oils, and each plays a part. Lavender brings its familiar, calming fragrance and helps soothe the look and feel of stressed skin. Cedarwood adds a grounding, woodsy note that makes the whole experience feel earthy and settled. Jasmine lifts it with a soft floral warmth that brightens the senses.
The result is a grounding, herbal aroma — not a perfume, and nothing synthetic. It is the kind of scent that signals to your body that it is time to slow down.
Vitamin E: an antioxidant finish
Vitamin E rounds out the formula as a natural antioxidant. It helps protect the skin from everyday environmental stressors and supports the look and feel of healthy, cared-for skin. Though used in a small amount, Vitamin E helps support the stability of the formula while contributing antioxidant benefits for the skin.
What does Muscle Butter feel like to use?
Muscle Butter has a rich, concentrated texture that melts on contact with the warmth of your skin. It starts firm in the jar, softens the moment you work it between your fingers, and sinks in as you massage it where you need it. The finish is soft and nourished, not greasy.
The experience is as much about scent and ritual as it is about the butter itself. As you apply it, the herbal aroma rises — calming, grounding, a little luxurious. Many people describe it as spa-like, and that is the idea. For a few minutes, your only job is to slow down, breathe, and take care of the body that carried you through the day.
How do you use Muscle Butter?
Using Muscle Butter takes less than a minute and works best as part of a consistent self-care routine. Simply apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and massage into areas that deserve a little extra attention. Whether you’re winding down after a workout, supporting tired muscles after a long day, or incorporating it into your daily wellness ritual, a little goes a long way thanks to its concentrated formula.
Here is the simple ritual, step by step:
- Start clean and dry. After a shower or bath, pat your skin dry. Muscle Butter absorbs best into dry skin.
- Use a small amount where you need it. Scoop a small amount, warm it between your hands, and massage it into the areas that feel worked, tense, or dry.
- Breathe and slow down. Take a few slow breaths and let the calming, herbal aroma settle you. This is the part most people skip and shouldn’t.
- Use daily or as needed. Make it part of your everyday routine, or reach for it after a workout, a long day, or before bed.
That fourth step is where the value lives. Muscle Butter rewards consistency, so the best results come from making it a habit rather than an occasional rescue.
When’s the best time to use Muscle Butter?
The short answer is whenever your body could use a grounding moment of care — but a few moments are especially well suited to it. After physical activity, when your muscles feel tired and overworked, it is a natural fit. So is the end of a long day, when you want to unwind and reset. And many people fold it into a wind-down routine right before bed, where the calming aroma helps signal that the day is done.
There is no wrong time. Daily use is genuinely beneficial for your skin, and the ritual is yours to shape around your life.
Who is Muscle Butter for?

Muscle Butter is made for anyone looking to care for their body with intention. That includes athletes and active adults, people who spend long hours on their feet, older adults supporting aging joints, children and adults with different body abilities, individuals navigating chronic pain, and anyone who values the grounding ritual of intentional body care.
Our community tends to share a few beliefs: that nature has real wisdom to offer, that self-care is the foundation of caring for others, and that what you put on your body matters. If that sounds like you, you will feel right at home with our Muscle Butter — whether you are recovering from a hard workout, winding down from a demanding day, or carving out five quiet minutes that belong only to you.
Is Muscle Butter natural, and can you use it every day?
Muscle Butter is made with natural, plant-based ingredients and is free from harsh synthetics, and it is gentle enough for daily use. Folding it into your everyday routine is exactly how it is meant to be used — regular care is where a butter like this does its best work.
If you have highly sensitive skin or known allergies to essential oils, do a quick patch test before your first full use: apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours. The formula is primarily made for the body, and while its gentle ingredients make it safe for facial use, it may feel too rich for oily or acne-prone skin. As with anything new, listen to your skin and go slowly.
Why Aye & I created Muscle Butter
Like everything at Aye & I Apothecary, Muscle Butter began with family.
Created by California herbalist Danielle Motley, the formula was born from both love and lived experience. It was inspired by her daughter, Ila Queen, whose journey led Danielle to deepen her knowledge of plants and herbal body care, and created in memory of her sister, AyeSha, who lived with chronic pain.
As Danielle researched kombo butter and other botanicals, she wasn’t looking for a product designed for one type of person. She set out to create something safe enough for her daughter, meaningful enough to honor her sister’s memory, and effective enough for the active adults in her own family.
That same philosophy continues to guide Aye & I today. Every ingredient is selected with intention, every formula is rooted in transparency, and every product is created with the belief that caring for our bodies is one of the most meaningful forms of self-care.
Muscle Butter is more than a product—it’s an expression of love, legacy, and the power of plants to support everyday wellness rituals across every stage of life.
